About Armin Sanayei

  • Armin Sanayei (b. 1992, Tehran-Iran) is an Iranian composer based in Austria since 2013.

    His works have been presented by ensembles such as the Alban Berg Ensemble Wien, Philharmonix Ensemble, Reconsil Ensemble Vienna, and Max Brand Ensemble, and featured in concert series such as the Wiener Symphoniker Konzertzyklus. His music has been performed at venues including the Wiener Konzerthaus (Großer Saal), Wiener Musikverein (Brahms Saal), and festivals such as Grafenegg Festival, BERGfest, Simn Festival (Bucharest), and Festival 4020 (Linz)

  • In 2022, his Elegy was premiered by Philharmonix Ensemble at the Wiener Konzerthaus. In 2019, he participated in the Ink Still Wet Workshop at Grafenegg Festival, working with the Tonkünstler Orchestra. His String Quartet No. 1 premiered in 2020 by the Alban Berg Ensemble Wien, and his Clarinet Quintet was presented with the Hugo Wolf String Quartet at Festival 4020, Linz (2013).

  • He is currently working on a new ballet composition.

  • Sanayei has been a three-time candidate (2018–2020) for the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Composer’s Award.

  • He studied composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MDW) with Judit Varga, Clara Iannotta, Detlev Müller-Siemens (student of O. Messiaen & G. Ligeti), and Martin Lichtfuss. He previously studied at the Art University of Tehran, explored Iranian folk music with Fariborz Rostami, and received private instruction in composition from Ahmad Pejman.

  • He currently lectures part-time at MDW and teaches at the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki (2024–2025).
